Keeping Your Parcel Safe

We have discussed in the past about the suggested procedure for dealing with unwanted guests on your property or in your home; however, we have yet to touch on what you can do as a resident of the Costa Rica Sims to ensure that your parcel isn't a target for griefing.

For those of you who have yet to experience griefing first hand or don't even know what it means to be griefed, here is a definition of griefing directly from the Second Life website "Griefing is a term which applies to activities designed to make another player's life or experience in Second Life unpleasant. " A much more involved definition of griefing can also be found on Wikipedia here.

Example of Griefing

How does this apply to land parcels in Costa Rica? The biggest way that griefers inflict grief on residents is by dropping badly scripted prims on parcels which then will typically have very loud sounds coming out of them as well as massive temporary particles/pictures or physically replicating prims that keep multiplying per the script inside the original prim that is dropped on the parcel. These objects will crash sims or slow them down so badly that you won't even be able to move. These griefers can only drop objects on parcels where build/create objects is allowed. If your parcel has build/create objects turned on anyone can drop objects on your land including griefers. Anyone that has been through a griefing attack doesn't care for it and your neighbors won't like it either if you aren't online to return the objects on your parcel if you can even move when you get there. Another problem that some second life residents have encountered is the use of listening scripts. If build/create objects is allowed on your parcel it is possible for someone to drop a spy script in a prim on your parcel and log every conversation that is done by you or anyone else who happens to be there. This is another example of something that no one wants to have done to them. It is imperative that you turn build/create objects off on your parcel to protect yourself and others and this is something that we can't automatically do for everyone within the estate, you have to do it yourself.

So how do you turn off build/create objects? It's very easy.

  • Go into about land by right clicking the land itself and selecting about land from the pie menu or left clicking the top of your viewer where it says the location that you are in, which should be your parcel.
  • You then select the options tab and make sure that where it says "create objects" that there is no check mark in "All Residents".
  • Once you have done this you are the only person who can build on your land. It is very important that you allow object entry and scripts by all residents so that people can move smoothly from parcel to parcel in vehicles such as boats.

There are certain instances where land owners would like to allow friend, companions or company to be able to rezz objects on their parcel. There is a way to do this without turning "create objects" back on for all residents. In order to do this you need to have a group established where you are the owner of the group. You may use a pre-existing group that you own or make a new one for your parcel. Go into about land on your parcel by once again right clicking the land and selecting about land from the pie menu or left clicking at the top of your viewer where your parcel name is and then selecting the general tab there is a group option, you may set your land to a group or deed it. The trick with this is that you don't have to deed your land to a group in order for members of the group to rezz objects you may simply set the land to a group to allow them to rezz objects.

I know that all this may sound confusing but it really isn't. If you need assistance in setting up groups and what to do in about land just instant message me, Jac Mornington or Felicity Sneerwell and we will be more than happy to assist you in making sure your parcel is protected from griefing.
