It’s time to meet another of our Mr. Costa Rica Finalists! Today I would like to introduce you to Mr. Brendan Macarthur. Model, great neighbor, and all around nice guy Brendan is someone I am sure you will enjoy getting to know as much as I have. Please say hello to Mr. Costa Rica Finalist…Brendan Macarthur!

How and why did you end up adding a Second Life to your RL?
I actually first learned of SL from a friend on an internet game site called Pogo. I had just lost my real life partner in July of 2007, so I spent a lot of time at home on the computer. When I first joined SL, of course, I knew nothing and no one. I soon found myself immersed in this world, a cross between a game and a social website. I became amazed at all you can do on SL. Building, scripting, all of it! The immediate purpose of SL was to fill the void in my real life, and I quickly made some amazing friends who are now a part of my real life as well.
What made you choose Costa Rica Sims as your home?
I found Costa Rica Sims by mistake! I did a search looking for white water rafting, and poof, I landed here. Once here, I spent some time exploring the variety of things to see and do, not even realizing that you could indeed reside here. I fell in love with the entire concept (one large community all interconnected as one), and moved here within 2 days.
What do you think sets Costa Rica Sims apart from all the other places one could choose to live in SL?
Once I made Costa Rica my home I was immediately welcomed as a member of the family. What a unique experience, unlike any that I have encountered elsewhere in Second Life. Costa Rica Sims means a lot to me...because of the friends that I have made, the moments of relaxing on the beach, the numerous events I have attended, and more importantly to me…the support of real world causes. It is an excellent opportunity for growth and the ability to bring everyone together to work for something that may mean a lot to them personally.
Why did you choose to enter the Mr. Costa Rica pageant?
I guess the main reason I decided to enter was the opportunity to represent a truly unique community within Second Life...one that I am proud to tell others that I reside in. Since I began my modeling career, I haven't yet pursued any titles. However, to be one of the many representatives for Costa Rica, I think that is something I would be honored to be able to do. For me, to earn the title of Mr. Costa Rica for 2011 will help me promote this amazing community and collaborate with other organizations to bring others to experience what Costa Rica means to me.
What are some of your favorite things to do in Costa Rica?
I attend almost every event. I have done most of the activities located all over the grid and return to many of them time and time again. Event wise, I think my favorite is the DJ Knock-Out. I also love going through the rain forest, the Art Museum, and the Forest of Hope. I go there at times just to relax and think about so many things…both in my real life and second life. All the amenities offered are amazing.
What would you tell someone thinking about making their home in Costa Rica Sims?
If someone questioned me about where to reside in SL, I would definitely offer to take them on a tour of Costa Rica, giving them a taste of what it's all about: the shopping, the events, the shows, the activities, the stunning landscapes, and (more importantly) the true sense of family. What more could you look for as your home?
What is the best thing about yourself you have to offer the Costa Rica community?
I am always willing to be the first in line, to assist those who need help in any way. Whether it's being someone to talk to, or whether it's building or providing items for various events...you will find I am always available, to anyone who is in need. If I find that I can’t provide the time or services asked of me, I will help by pointing them in the direction that they need...hopefully the right one!
One thing you bring from RL to SL that you think is important?
I think one of my best traits is my sense of humor. I always strive to make others laugh and feel good about themselves or their situation. I always say, if I wake up and both feet hit the floor…it’s a good day! Losing someone close to you in real life can change your outlook on so many things, so I try not to worry about trivial things...life is too short. Enjoy yourself, take care of those around you, and always remember what’s truly important. One of my favorite sayings is, “be kinder than necessary, because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.”
Anything from SL you have learned that has been beneficial to your RL?
I would guess one thing that I have learned is how we are really all connected on this small planet. I have met so many people from all over the world, and regardless of culture, background, race, or religion, we are really all the same. It sort of brings that to focus when you have the opportunity to meet to so many individuals from all over. I have always been an accepting person in my real life, and being on Second Life has seeded that train of thought deeper into my persona. Many of the people I have met on Second Life reached for my hand, but touched my heart.
Many thanks to Brendan for taking the time to answer questions, and for allowing us a glimpse into his thoughts and life, I know everyone appreciates the chance to get to know him better! Tomorrow you will get to meet finalist number 3!
