Physics Performance Update

[ Saturday Update --- We talked to them again, and it looks like this bug is affecting about 600 sims, mostly open space ones, but they now realize that it will affect full sims like PNS.  Concierge indicates we cannot expect a resolution before Wednesday.]
-----------------------------------------------------
As previously blogged, we have been working with the Lindens to resolve the lag, most notably in Peninsula Nicoya Sur.  I'm sorry to report that not much progress has been made despite moving the sim to different servers (twice).  The Lindens are stumped and so am I.  Unfortunately no change happened with the update to Server 1.21.1 either.

The Lindens told me today that there is a possibility that it is related to an issue they just became aware of early this week, which is that the performance will drop heavily when the sim takes a backup snapshot of itself.  They are working on a fix for this, and hope to have that in 1.21.2.  I am not completely convinced that it is related to this, so we will keep looking for the cause.

Here are some things you can do to help:
1) Enable a physics beacon - this will highlight physical objects like you do for transparent ones.  To enable a physics beacon, Go to the View menu, then select Beacons/Physical Objects.  Then also in view select Beacons Always On.

2) Look around your property and property of people next to you (including skyboxes and dungeons).  If you see any physical object, make sure it doesnt' collide with anything.  Also see if it is behaving properly.  It is helpful to see if any movement by the physical object cooresponds to the dip in performance.  If there is a coorelation, please call me right away.

3) If possible, take your physical objects back into inventory and observe the performance.  If performance jumps up and stays up, that means something you own may be malfunctioning.

Most of all, if you think there is anything suspect, let me know by IM or notecard.

Cheers,

Emi
